Company Spotlights are where we highlight the amazing people that make DiRAD who we are. This month, we’re highlighting the unsung heroes who make our workplace tick — Human Resources! They’re more than paperwork and policies, they are dedicated to supporting every employee from their first day to their career milestones. In this article, we’re interested in hearing more about what they do, who they are, and why they rock.

How long have you worked at DiRAD?

Kim: 4 ½  years
Kirsten: 2 years

In short, what do you do?

Kim: I oversee all the HR functions of the company (recruiting, hiring, training, employee relations) & ensure compliance with labor laws.
Kirsten: I assist with admin tasks like recruitment, onboarding, benefits, comic relief, and employee records.

How has your job changed over your employment with DiRAD?

Kim: When I started with DiRAD, it was just me in HR, but now there are 2 of us and we are able to share the workload.
Kirsten: Change is constant; no two days are alike, especially post-COVID. If I had to point out one way working in HR has changed, it’s that we’ve focused more on Workplace Mental Health.

How much interaction does HR have with other departments at DiRAD?

Kim: Not much unless there is a departmental issue.  We tend to be in touch with Managers or individual employees as needed.
Kirsten: I have the gift of gab, and nothing stops me from talking to anyone about anything. I have met everyone on payroll at least once; I’ve got no problem pinging them if I need something, vice versa.

Are there any mentors, professional networks, or resources that have been particularly valuable in supporting your career growth, and what advice would you give someone seeking a similar career path?

Kim: There were a few people who I worked with and for at Stewart’s early on in my career that were amazing teachers, and I don’t even think they realize it!
Kirsten:  I have found great resources on LinkedIn, HRCI Forums (Human Resources Certification Institute), and Reddit.

What would happen if HR ceased to exist?

Kim: The duties of HR would fall on others in the company and if they are not up to speed on the laws or in the know on compliance, it could be detrimental to the company from a legal standpoint.
Kirsten: Complete chaos.

What are some things you love about working for DiRAD?

Kim: We have the best employees at DiRAD – hands down, we’re a pet friendly office, and we encourage mental health awareness and family time.
Kirsten: I love being able to have a work–life balance. I can also be my authentic self and show that in what we do.

How is DiRAD different from other places you’ve worked?

Kim: DiRAD is different because we prioritize work/life balance and that is something that is hard to come by but is appreciated by someone like me who has kids in sports and is constantly running around.
Kirsten: I have more creative freedom, for example, sending out thank you/birthday cards.

Tell us one thing you’re loving right now (music, books, snacks, TV shows, hobbies, anything!)

Kim: Reading/listening to books has been huge for me this year.  I haven’t read a book in more than 20 years, but I was looking for a way to relax & regulate my mind.  My goal this year was 30 books and I’m finishing up book #44 right now.  I listen to audiobooks when I do housework & laundry, and I read whenever I get time to sit with a book, usually before bed.
Kirsten: I’m currently in my Cozy PC Game Era.
